08/14: Threaded Comments

August 14th, 2009

I just activated threaded comments, three levels deep. Not that we need it right now, he, but as soon as people are replying to certain comments, it’s nice to have the feature activated.

So… not much to see here, please move along.

And come back again. :)

08/7: Creating Ulysses Mobile

August 7th, 2009

Ulysses Mobile Concept iPhone

When I started work on Ulysses Mobile, I wanted to create a stand-alone writing application for the iPhone/iPod touch. It may have had basic compatibility features with its bigger desktop brother, but I didn’t think of a 1:1 port of Ulysses 2.0 to the small screen.

I wanted to create a writing application tailored to the iPhone, and not just an iPhone conversion of a desktop app.

Of course, I also thought it couldn’t be done anyway. Filters, multiple notes, projects, bookmarks, full-fledged semantic editing with markers and stuff — impossible. Add syncing to the mix alongside Ulysses’ (desktop) system of keeping open and saved versions of each document, and you have an untamable beast of complexity; and uselessness.

See, while I strongly believe people want to write larger texts on the iPhone, I also believe nobody wants to wade through 20 different screens just to annotate a certain part of a chapter on his ride home.

07/17: Ulysses 2.0.1 and new versioning scheme

July 17th, 2009

Hey,

this is just a quick notifier that we just released Ulysses 2.0.1 into the wild. This is a bug fix version only and resolved some childhood illnesses of both Ulysses applications. It’s available through the internal updater.

New with this update is also our new versioning schema: From now on we will release 0.0.x releases only for bug fixes and minor stuff. All new features that are bigger than “small” will come along 0.x releases. This basically is to signalize the progression of features and not getting stuck in inappropriate numbers :)

Happy updating!
Max

07/13: 2.0 done and I am finished…

July 13th, 2009

Well, here we are. Ulysses 2.0 is finally out, and apart from a few early hickups with the store, everything seems to go rather smoothly. This may change, of course, once everybody comes rushing in, but so be it. We’re prepared. ;)

I’d like to take this opportunity to thank everybdy involved with this rather stupid idea of taking a small software company and turning it around 180 degrees. Max and I had this vague concept, and while it took us far too long to make it happen, we’re very happy with where the Soulmen are today and glad everything worked out just the way it currently does.

Reboot.
Check.

07/11: We are close…

July 11th, 2009

… just wanted to share the status quo here:

Ulysses Disk Image

You might notice that the disk image icon is still missing.
This is how close we are :)

07/2: New pricing for Ulysses

July 2nd, 2009

A view on a road in Mojave National Preserve, CA.

As we already announced yesterday, Ulysses 2.0 and Ulysses core 2.0 will be released on Wednesday, July 8. This Update hosts a tremendous list of features, refinements and polishes.

One change that we never spoke about and one that has not been brought up so far is the pricing. After six (!!!) years of free Updates, bringing Ulysses 1.0 to 1.6r2, we finally decided to do a paid update.

And we decided to make Ulysses cheaper. Not because we think it’s overpriced or not worth what we charge. It’s rather that we want to make it more affordable for many users. We don’t want people to choose a different application just because of the price.

As of July 8, 2009 this will be the new price tags:

  • Ulysses 2.0 full version EUR 44.99
  • Ulysses 2.0 educational EUR 34.99
  • Ulysses core 2.0 full version EUR 24.99

For all Users who purchased after January 1st, 2009 version 2.0 will be a free update. For all others there are two options:

  • Updating any version to Ulysses 2.0 full version EUR 24.99
  • Updating any version to Ulysses core 2.0 full version EUR 14.99

07/1: Ulysses 2.0 — Release Candidate

July 1st, 2009

We finally have it.
Here it is — the release candidate for Ulysses 2.0 and Ulysses core 2.0. Please feel free to download it and submit anything you do not like or would like to have in a later version to our bug tracker Mantis.

There are some very small hiccups remaining. We want to make a perfect release this time, please help us in doing so. How to help? It’s quite easy:
1) Go 2) Grab 3) A Copy.

PS: Someone interested in the new pricing?

07/1: Ulysses 2.0 Release Date

July 1st, 2009

Dear readers,

we are proud to announce hereby that we are proud that on the sixth anniversary of the first public release of Ulysses 1.0 we proudly announce that the final release date for Ulysses 2.0 will be in exactly one week.

In short: Yep, we’ve made it. We are nearly done. Actually we wanted to have the release today, but you know… The website wasn’t yet quite finished. Now it’s the 8th of July, 2009.

And as it’s our sixth birthday today, we also have a little present for all of you: Later today there will be the release candidate for Ulysses 2.0. Available here and through the internal update mechanism.

Cheers, Max

06/10: Wrapping things up (start of, actually)

June 10th, 2009

Ulysses 2.0 Final

Puh, these days are just packed. Laying finishing touches on some interface elements, squashing late bugs, collecting localizations, squashing new bugs, creating PR letters and product information pages, double-checking new Help content, the new registration system, squashing bugs, the new updater (works!), and finally moving every little bit over to SOULMEN CI.

Apart from standard pre-release craziness, you won’t believe how much blue-tec stuff has amassed over the years, and how much work it is to completely switch out company names and logos and colors and all… no going back, of course. :)

But not much time to blog-post, either.

So, release date. You want a release date? A fixed and firm release date? And a price tag? Standard price and update-fee? Like… Ulysses 2.0, available at the-soulmen.com, beginning… beginning… beginning, uhm, or rather starting at… at…

05/30: Ulysses 2.0 Beta 6

May 30th, 2009

Beta 6 is up, go “Check for Updates…”

This release is the feature-complete. We might change the look of some buttons, might add or modify a shortcut here or there, might even juggle some menu items around — but that’s about it.

Preferences will need to get cleaned up, some interface strings have errors. Localizations are incomplete, and the Help does not reflect the change from 1.7 to 2.0 or much of the new features, for that matter. The links in the Help menu still lead to unfinished webpages.

Other than that, this will be it.
Happy testing, you know where to report. ;)

BTW: The release version will include several project templates as well as five to six default themes for use via Fonts & Colors. We might even include some freely available fonts, though this is still undecided (e.g. Gentium).
