Stapler: drag-n-drop?

    Where on an item do I need to click in order to drag? nothing I'm trying seems to work!

    I discovered that holding down the command key allows me to drag vertically (is that supposed to be required?)

    I'm not sure how to drag an item "horizontally" (or any other way to make a node into a child of another.) Is that possible?

    Which items do you mean? I think the sentence you are citing is about the rearranging the tabs in the editor pane. If you want to organize your docuemnts inside the project, it might be best for you to have a look at our screencast dedicated to just that topic.

    I scratched my head for a while, until I realized you thought I was talking about Ulysses. This is a Stapler thread, and the mention of drag-n-drop is on the Stapler page (and pretty clearly intended to be about content-bearing items)

    My idea that I could drag to make a "child" was just based on the allusion to "blends certain aspects of ... outliners" (and perhaps some wishful thinking :-)

    So, in Stapler, is drag-n-drop supposed to work? (It seems you should at least make what currently happens with the command key work without it.)

    And can the documents form a hierarchy, or is the outliner-element just being able to hide the text content? Or what about just being able to quickly make/rearrange a bulleted list *within* an item?

    Yes, you're right. You were talking about Stapler and I was some suffering from a weird kind of developer-question-blindess. Sorry for that. Here comes the right answer:

    Stapler does allow dragging by pressing command only. And it's a flat hierarchy by intention. It is designed rather as a to-do list kind of thing than as an outliner. There are many good outliners out there, we did not want to create another one. And to be honest, we will not change that any time soon.

    That said - there will be a completely new, completely different version of Stapler some day. The concept is pretty much done, the feature set will be amazing -- but for now we (sadly) do not have the time for it. But as far as I know, it will not add hierarchies in the first version...

    ok. just need to make sure people don't get the wrong impression and waste time trying to figure out how to do something Stapler doesn't do (like indenting to create a nested hierarchy of items.) Just be explicit somewhere. And remember that "items can be rearranged" is ambiguous, especially after you've just reminded us that outliners were one of the primary inspirations for Stapler.

    Also, on your webpage, please fix the error from the quote in my first post (it's cmd-drag, not "simple drag") ... although there's no reason I can see not to post a quick update to allow simple drag to work as expected, which would make it lighter to use. I'd prefer the latter, but at least the former is really needed.

    PS. You're creating a great deal of cognitive dissonance between the idea that the "feature set" of v2 will be "amazing" and the planned simplicity of v1, which I respect, such as "flat hierarchy by intention." I'm picturing Stapler v1 with footnotes, an easter egg flight simulator, and a mail merge, and it aint pretty. :-)

    One more PS. I think add/remove item would be easier to find under Item. When I'm poking around to see what I can do, I don't think to look in the Edit menu which is usually the standard stuff.

    The core of the concept of v2 will be the same like v1. A flat list, no easter eggs. But one new thing will be searching, better look, better support for attachments, and some things I don't want to talk about for now... As you can see with Ulysses, we've managed to get the app even less bloated than in the initial release over 6 years ago. We won't bloat stapler :)

    We'll fix it on the website.
