Ulysses 2.0: Rich Text format in Main Editor Window

    Friends:

    I would love to see rich text format available in the main editor window as an option. I'll bet the vast majority of us don't do markup language or publish beyond a pdf file.

    You can do something like rich text by setting up styles for italic and bold and have them displayed like that. But the tags wont' go away. We are thinking about building a view that actually hides the tag, having it even more like rich text.

    Plain pure original rich text like in all other apps, will hover not come. There are several good competitors out there that follow this approach. To not do rich text and by that enabling semantics is the core of Ulysses' concept, so this will probably not change...

    Thanks for the quick response. I really like Ulysses. I would love to also see some type of password protection/encryption of the files.

    Keep up the great work! Try and make an iPad app as well!

    There are already some really great tools out there with which you can easily encrypt your files. One I found really useful is Espionage, which you might find to work well for your, too. I heve to admin I did not yet test it with Ulysses but doubt that there might occur any problems...

    You can do something even more like rich text by setting up *markers* to make text appear bold or in italic or underlined ... no tags then, obviously. The shortcuts cmd-i and cmd-b suggest themselves, and it is very much a rich text experience (even though, of course, you still cannot copy rich text *into* Ulysses).

    That's right. However, markers cannot overlap, Inline styles can. So there's a tradeoff depending on what you want. Inline styles can also be typed, markers work via menu/shortcut only.

    It would also be nice to be able to invoke inline styles via short-cut (select and hit the shortcut). I don't think that is possible now, or am I missing something.

    Just got to the style preferences, in the last column you can define a shortcut for each style. Please be aware that you choose shortcuts not yet used by the application. There are some issues we are working on if you do it otherwise.

    I have to say semantic editing and a lack of rich text is the reason I moved to Ulysses from Scrivener. Drove me mad having to keep trying to figure out font type, size etc... Much prefer this option.

    The semantics is what makes U stand out from the rest. It forces one to focus on the words and adding meaning to them, not italics or bold. Makeup is for the afterparty..

    At least there's choice. If you like Rich Text, there's Scrivener, when you don't, there's Ulysses. I tried Scrivener for a while. And there's much to like about it. However, semantic text writing is just faster for me, because I can just stay in the text with my hands on the keyboard. There's just so much more I can do with semantic editing than I can do with a Rich Text view, such as quickly add note paragraphs, strike through paragraphs, but keeping everything in the text. Then export the text to remove notes, etc. Mostly I even find the Note Pad pane in Ulysses unnecessary. No RTF in Ulysses just keeps your focus. Also, the different views in Scrivener and the hierarchic Binder give a cluttered UI feel for me. What I do like about Scrivener is the snap shots! That's pretty useful.

    Snapshots is something we have had on our list for ages. And we plan to include them some day. It's just a matter of time we have and of a concept that is clean and powerful enough. Eventually you will have this in Ulysses as well :)

    That's nice to hear about snapshots. And yes, it should be well-implemented. So I can see that it takes much effort to get it right. And getting it right is what matters the most!

    In Scrivener, it's not easy to see what the changes between different snapshots really are. But this might not even be the most important thing about snapshots. What I found in using snapshots in Scrivener was that I use it the most when I wanted to do over large parts of a document or even a whole document, but wanting to keep a copy of what I had written. Snapshots is a great way to collect discarded drafts of the same document but keep them hidden. Because sometimes, I want to peek back at what I had written earlier but discarded, yet Scrivener snapshots would not let me do this in an elegant way. What would be nice if in Ulysses one could peak at a snapshot of the document in the Preview pane, while being able to write the current version in the Editor.

    Hi,

    Newbie here; I commented here because Migs and Max came closest to my inquiry—hope that's the correct protocol. I'm using U to create technical Getting Started guides. I use several paragraph styles to indicate different levels of the exercise steps, and a few inline styles to indicate user input, interface words, etc. The semantec editor concept is perfect for me because I can tag the text with it's meaning and indicate this to the graphics people without having to do their work in addition to mine in their layout software. Brilliant!

    For me, the editor gets to be hard to read because the markup is on virtually every line. I have made the markup minimal, i.e. «user input» and |interface|, but after awhile, my left brain and right brain hurt from switching so much! So, I would like to request a way to minimize the markup characters, so that I could still see them as I type, but I could then have a display focussed for reading when I review what I've written.

    I plan to export basic XML so that the graphics people can bring the text and tags into Adobe inDesign. Thanks for your commentary.

    I'm a brand new Ulysses user (thanks for the holiday discount!), and I'd like to bump this thread and add my vote for this feature. I like Ulysses's plain-text approach, but I'd also like to be able to hide some of the 'noise' while I'm writing....

    An upcoming version of Ulysses will allow you to fade the tags, reducing clutter from the screen. Rich text editing, however, is not on our schedule.

    Yeah, I'm really glad that rich text editing is not going to be added. Semantic text editing *is* Ulysses.

    However, let me add that it would be really, *really* nice if the full functionality of semantic text editing (in plain text) also made it to the "Notes" section of the program, which is currently rich text.
