General: Cycling through panes and keyboard shortcuts

    Hi
    I was just looking for a keyboard shortcut to get from the Editor to the Title field in Document Info, when I discovered that if the cursor is in the Editor, hitting Control-Tab twice moves the cursor to the Notes pane, and from there one more hit moves it to the Document Info Title pane. But hitting Control-Tab one more time doesn’t move the cursor back to the Editor.

    Is Control-Tab supposed to cycle through these panes? If so, why doesn’t it move the cursor from Document Info?

    To make the mystery even more interesting:
    When I check the Help file, I find that the keyboard shortcut for Cycle from Editor to Notes to Title to Editor is Command-Option-Up Arrow.
    But on my machine at least, this shortcut doesn’t work.

    Should it?

    Ctrl-Tab cycles through the various user interface elements and stops at text input fields. From there, you can continue with the tab key without Ctrl. We'll check if we can make this more consistent.

    We'll also investigate the other shortcut. Is this on a MacBook?

    Maybe this is the problem?


    With cursor in Editor, after *one* Ctrl-Tab where should cursor be? I don't see it.

    With cursor in Document Info, here's what I get:
    one Tab—> Project Search
    two Tabs—>Groups&Collections
    three Tabs—>Documents
    four Tabs—> ?
    five Tabs—> ?
    six Tabs—> ?
    seven Tabs—> Editor

    For me, the time I find all of this a (*minor*) nuisance, is when I'm making new documents and I'd like to be able to name them and start typing.

    I'd gladly forego the shortcuts for Project Search, Groups&Collections, and Documents to be able to navigate more easily the right hand side of the screen. That may just be me, and of course there are a lot of windows/panes to consider. But it does seem like the sheer number of panes to cycle through makes the cycle feature a bit less useful than it might otherwise be. Just my 2 Pfennige.

    Just want to say that I tried these shortcuts on a new MacBookPro and they work just as they should.
    My problem is just a quirk of my old machine.

    The keyboard shortcuts for cycling between text entry in the various panes don't work as described in the manual (Cmd+Opt+Up or Down arrow). Is there a new alternative? I'd rather not have to go through all the interface elements just to jump from the title to the editor.

    This might also be hardware related. It definitely works on my MacBook – what kind of Mac do you use?

    I take it back - sometimes the Cmd+Opt+Up Arrow works perfectly, but sometimes it doesn't. And I'm sorry, I can't tell you why it doesn't when it doesn't. I just get the OS X error "plonk" sound and that's it. I'll see if I can identify a sequence.

    @bashosfrog: that would be great! we saw this once in a time but without a reproducible pattern such issues are nearly impossible to fix :(

    I, too, find that keyboard shortcuts Cmd+Opt+Up and Cmd+Opt+Down are unreliable. Sometimes they work. Sometimes they don’t. Restarting Ulysses fixes the problem...for a while. I can’t reliably reproduce the problem but I've seen it quite a few times lately.
