Yes it is. I have to admit that it's partially ideological and partially a technical leftover from ancient times. The ideological party says: concentrate on one project (though we should give you the option, I think). The technical part is: we had it this way from the beginning and I weren't thinking about that we might change it at some point. Therefore, I'd have to change a lot in the app infrastructure.
We have it on our list, but don't expect multiple open projects too soon.
There's a nice thing you can do: Go to the preferences and then to Startup. Select "open previously opened project" for action when closing a project. Using cmd-shift-w you can then simply "switch" projects. But it's exactly a you say: focus on one project is good but sometimes it's not ...
