(In Kürze: Festplattencrash, Ersatzcomputer ohne Internetanschluss, Projekt nicht mehr editier- und exportierbar, 100-Euro-Lizenz wertlos, Tage mit Copy and Paste und manueller Übersetzung der Fußnoten- und Headline-Markups in Word verbracht. Eure Antwort damals auf meine Kein-Internet-Misere: Da hätte sich sicher per _E-Mail_ was regeln lassen ... )

Nun die nächste Frage: Nachdem ihr zur Besinnung gekommen seid, was wird mit Kunden, die noch Projekte im Ulysses 1.x-Format haben? Wenn Ulysses 2.0 keine Aktivierung mehr braucht, werdet ihr ja wohl irgendwann die Aktivierungsserver abschalten. Aber wann? Nächstes Jahr, in fünf Jahren? Und wie komme ich nächstes Jahr oder in fünf Jahren an meine Daten, wenn ich U. 1.6 auf einem neuen Computer installiere? Besteht jetzt der Zwang zum Upgrade? Oder werdet ihr eine aktivierungsfreie Version 1.6 zur Verfügung stellen?

Mein Problem: ich sehe keine Rechtfertigung für ein Upgrade außer dem Umstand, dass meine alten Projektdateien dadurch sozusagen von der Geiselnahme durch eure Aktivierungsmechanik befreit werden. Der Upgrade-Preis ist sicher nicht unfair für die Arbeit, die ihr euch gemacht habt, aber ich müsste ihn als Freilösegebühr zahlen, nur um von euren Servern unabhängig zu sein. Und das will ich aus Prinzip nicht tun.

Ulysses war das erste und das letzte Programm mit Aktivierungszwang, das ich mir gekauft habe. Die Erfahrung war ein Desaster. Es zeigt exemplarisch, dass solche Diebstahls-Sicherungen immer nur die ehrlichen Kunden treffen. Würde mich interessieren, wie ihr jetzt retrospektiv mit diesem Problem umgehen wollt. Dass ihr den Aktivierungszwang in der neuen Version endlich abschafft, ist zu begrüßen. Nur schafft es leider das Problem der alten Version nicht aus der Welt, sondern macht es - Stichwort Server-Abschaltung - nur noch dringlicher ...

Wir werden uns auf jeden Fall etwas einfallen lassen, was in ein paar Jahren mit 1.6-Projekten und der Onlineaktivierung der Version 1.6 geschieht. Eine Version ohne Onlineaktivierung wäre eine Möglichkeit. Ich denke, dass Max sicher etwas dazu sagen wird, sobald er aus seinem wohlverdienten Urlaub zurück ist.

I agree with you that it's too early to release a free version of U 1.6. After all, it's not _that_ different from 2.0, and you would risk losing sales.

But you could, for instance, build a version of U 1.6 that can be registered offline (with the serial number people already have or a new one that would be handed out on request) and then post a note on your website that says something like "If want this version, email us your registration details for U 1.x and we send you a download link."

Replacing the online activation code in U 1.x with an offline registration mechanism will require a bit of time and effort, and it will only benefit people like me who are, for one reason or another, not willing to upgrade to U 2.0. So what's your incentive? Well, you could shut down your activation server immediately and stop worrying about managing this whole online registration database stuff. The alternative would be to keep this server running for years. (How many years? That's an interesting question, not least from a legal point. Nowhere in the contract that customers agreed to by purchasing U 1.x is it mentioned that the licence is time-limited. In other words, you would have to keep your activation server for U 1.x running as long as you're in business.)

Either way, this obsolete version of Ulysses will require your attention beyond the release of version 2.0. If you re-release U 1.6 with an offline reg mechanism, it will be a one-time effort, and the problem will be solved for good. If you don't, you will have to maintain the whole online activation structure for as long as you and users of U 1.x are around. So I think it's in everyone's best interest to have an offline version of U 1.6 as soon as possible.
