I can get the footnote export feature to work fine when I export to PDF, but when I export to rtf, no footnotes. I am using the default {{-footnote here}} tag. Any idea why this isn't working? I have tried opening the rtf in Textedit, iTextExpress, and Bean. Any help would be appreciated.

Also the images I have exported have really messed up the format in both PDF and rtf.

I haven't checked out iTextExpress yet, but neither TextEdit nor Bean support footnotes natively. Pages also doesn't support RTF footnotes. The only word processors with footnote support I'm aware of are Microsoft Word, OpenOffice Writer and Nisus. Unfortunately, we can't really do anything about this, since it is the lack of the editors of not implementing the RTF standard completely.

Also the images I have exported have really messed up the format in both PDF and rtf.

Is this because the images are too large or too small? Currently, images are exported in the same dimensions as they were inserted into the Notes.

Textedit and Bean are unable to display RTF footnotes. I've been playing around with iText Express a bit now and it seems to be able to only support footnotes when "Wrap to page" is enabled, but it doesn't open RTF files by default with this wrapping enabled. Also, it crashes every time I click on a footnote in the sample files or try to create a new footnote in a new document. I'm not sure if we can modify our RTF output to automatically open with Wrap to page enabled in iText Express. Other RTF footnote aware apps should already show the Ulysses created footnotes with current settings.

An alternative is Mellel, which is relatively cheap; I prefer it over Word if I need a wordprocessor. It supports footnotes, endnotes, the lot, but I never tried it with pictures I hasten to add.

Thanks for all the responses. I ended up exporting to word without the images (because word won't open the rtfd) and then putting the images directly into word. In my first post I wrote rtf but it should have been rtfd.

My issue is with exporting with footnotes and images. Here is what I have found:

    - Word, Mellel, and Open Office, all do fine opening exported rtf documents with footnotes. Mellel will open an exported rtfd but neither the images nor the footnotes are displayed.

    - Pages displays the images of an exported rtfd perfectly, but of course not the footnotes. I enjoy Pages and wish it was possible to export footnotes from U, but that is something you all can't control.

    - iTextExpress and Bean will open an exported rtfd, but the images are all messed up and no footnotes. The image display problem could be due to the size.

    - Which brings me to **Nisus Writer**, which displayed the images correctly as well as the footnotes. The only problem is that it is fairly pricey.

For now I will just export to rtf and put the images in Word separately. I might also consider forking out the money for Nisus Writer. Thanks again for the comments.

Mellel most certainly displays footnotes, if it does not, something is wrong in your set-up.

Mellel most certainly does display footnotes if exported in rtf format (as I said above). It doesn't display footnotes when exported in rtfd, although it does open the file (as I said above).

rjleamaster, we will be fixing these export issues in an upcoming release. (or at least provide a better workaround)

This confused me for a very long time tonight. I tried opening rtf files in textedit, then Pages, and could not see footnotes in either application. The only program that would actually show them was Word 2011 which takes a super long time to start on my old Macbook. A fix to the footnote export issue for Ulysses 2 would be very helpful to me.

Well the fact that neither TextEdit nor Pages show footnotes is something we can't fix. Both apps do not support reading in RTF with footnotes, besides the format supporting them. TextEdit doesn't support them at all and Pages just ignores them.

There are, luckily, a few more apps that allow to open RTF with footnotes. There include, as you mentioned, Word, but also Mellel, Nissus Writer Express and OpenOffice.
