    When I end a sentence with a word or phrase in quotation marks the terminating punctuation belongs inside the quotation marks. But when I do a double space after the closing quotation to start the next sentence the application thinks I need to insert a period. Can this feature be turned off?

    Hello wprattutah,

    this shortcut which inserts a period automatically after double tapping the space bar belongs to the system settings of your iPad.
    You can simply disable this automatism via System Settings > General> Keyboard > "." Shortcut.
