I just updated to version 1.52. When I got to my computer I found that many many files were deleted from Dropbox and replaced with new untitled files. Although I don't seem to have lost actual text, titles and creation dates are gone.

Just a word of warning to anyone who might avoid a similar disaster.

I don't really know how to put this, except that we're extremely sorry about those problems with Dropbox syncing. Although we tested Daedalus 1.5 and 1.5.2 thoroughly on many devices and configurations, some bugs remained, including the one you mentioned. As you already said, only the file names (and therefore the sheet titles) were changed. No sheet contents were lost.
We are already working on a solution for this bug and the next version will fix this. Otherwise, you can also rename the sheets in question manually.

Again, we're really sorry about this and hope that Daedalus 1.5.3 will fix the remaining issues. If you have any further questions, you can also contact us directly at support@the-soulmen.com.

    Thanks for the quick response.
Is there a way to keep Dropbox activated without iCloud activated? I use iCloud for tracking my contacts and scheduling but my Dropbox information is separate. It seems that I can't have Dropbox without iCloud. Everything was working so well until this upgrade. Frustrating.

You should be able to deactivate iCloud in the settings for Daedalus (not the in-app settings but the system-wide ones). Does this help?

I've tried it, but then inside the app, Dropbox won't link. Not until I activate iCloud will Dropbox work

To be more specific. With iCloud off in the main settings. I go to synch, turn on Dropbox but the Sync Now! button remains grayed out and is not selectable.

Is it in principle possible to link Daedalus with your Dropbox account in the synchronization settings?

Ok, I did have the lost-title problem with some sheets in 1.5 but that I can fix. Also, since 1.5 when I open the app, the sheet with which I start won't move down with swipe until I open the keyboard and enter something. Other sheets will move. 1.5.2 still evinces this behavior. Don't know about the lost title thing yet but hope it has gone away.

I still think this app is great. Stuff happens, right? Anyway I am writing a novel in it and it has really freed me up (no big clunky box, no dumb MicroLook). So I'm sticking with it and trusting that things will get resolved.

Regrettably, I seem to be having precisely the problem Tomgrrl reports above. The sheet I was working on before I minimized Daedalus just freezes, so I have to swipe out and rummage a bit within the stack to make it usable again.

Worse than that, I have lost several fragments of text which is apparently due to some sync issues. Basically, I sync the sheet before minimizing Daedalus, but then, when I fire it up again, the ominous blinking cloud icon appears and the latest version of the sheet is replaced by the previous one :(

This is strange, as I never had a single problem with Daedalus before, it was a very stable and reliable app. I really hope that the syncing / freezing issues are soon resolved, as I would hate to have to replace Daedalus with anything else – no other app is even close to Daedalus in terms of usability and design.

I agree with Tomgrrl, the app is a really superior writing tool; and until this update, has been very dependable.

I recovered the deleted files by getting them from the invisible folder called .dropbox.cache, and renamed them (thanks to Goetz for the ruby script he so promptly sent me, even though I had already done it with the app I'm accustomed to using, A Better Finder Rename).

Fwiw, since everything was safely backed up, as a test, I put the renamed files back where they were in Dropbox, deleted all the new untitled ones there, and opened Daedalus. All the untitled files I had deleted disappeared, and the renamed files synced to Daedalus; but then the app created a complete new set of untitled files and uploaded them back to Dropbox, keeping untitled doubles of everything locally.

I have the same problem with a loss of titles on most sheets. If I retype the title, it seems to save it. but if you close Daedalus and open it up again, the cloud icon appears and the title is gone again. Only thing I can think of that may be different between the sheets that keep their title and those that don't is that sheets created initially in the app seem to retain their title. But I'm not 100% certain about that.

Oh I seem to have iCloud off, I'm only using Dropbox.

Ok, I just tried using the Sync to Dropbox option from within the sheet (under export menu) and it seemed to work and didn't do anything horrid to the text or its title. So is the problem just with global sync?

One more new behavior: Daedalus now displays a red notification dot on the icon, with a number one in it, but I can't find any indication of what this means.

    My problem is as follows:

I'm losing text. Since I upgrade to 1.5 version I have problems to keep my last paragraphs on Daedalus. Also, it keeps appearing at the start of Daedalus a Cloud icon that blinks and I have currently ICloud off because I don't use it. I use Dropbox to export. I don't sync because it just syncs in .txt and I prefer .rtf.

What can I do to deactivate the iCloud in Daedalus? It seems that it wants to connect or something and for that reason it only lets to appear the very last work since before I upgraded to this version 1.5.

I really expect your next version really soon because I can't lose more work and I can't work in here anymore.

I suggest to fix the sync to iCloud since many people use Dropbox.

    @Tomgrrl:

When iCloud is activated, the Dropbox auto-sync is disabled (otherwise we would ran into conflicts between different devices synchronizing them at the same time from iCloud and Dropbox). The red numbers show the number of stacks that are currently out-of-sync with Dropbox.

We are extremely sorry for the problems occurring in the current version of Daedalus. We're currently working hard to fix these issues.

    Hi everyone!

We investigated the issues regarding the lost sheet titles and fixed it in the upcoming Daedalus 1.5.3 release. We hope that it will be available on the AppStore this week.

Until then we suggest not to modify any sheets missing titles. They will appear again after the upgrade, unless they have not been modified.

    All the best,

    Friedrich

    Hi everyone!

Today we were able to release Daedalus 1.5.4 that should fix the issues with empty titles and Dropbox syncing. We are extremely sorry for the inconveniences you've experienced!

    Thank you for your patience!

1.5.4 is still broken. It is now asking me chose a default folder to sync with within my Dropbox folder. I never needed to do this before. It was smart enough to sync back and forth with my various Dropbox folders. Now I have to change my default folder every time I need to work ona different project that lives in a different folder. Actually, tried that it still wants to sync with the previous folder and I'm still getting "untitled" file names. Aurghh!
Any way to get back an older version? It worked so well

Update. I've disabled iCloud and only syncing with Dropbox. Every I save a file on my desktop it creates a duplicate file on my iPad numbered sequentially (1,2,3, etc...). What have you guys done to a great product?
  1.
Tried it...spent about an hour just trying to get an accurate sync, deleting duplicates, deleting previously deleted collections that popped up again...Aaaargh!

    Went straight back to WriteRoom.

    Hi rtlbeaton and GediWorrier,

we were able to reproduce the bug on our side and will submit a bugfix ASAP. In the meantime, you should be able to work around the problem by changing your conflict handling policy to "Keep Newest". For this, open your sync settings in Daedalus, press the "Edit" button (on the top right), "Manage Accounts", select your Dropbox account(s), press "Conflicts" and select "Keep Newest". In case your problems should persist, please report back (or drop us a line at support@the-soulmen.com).

    Götz

Sorry, but workarounds with Dropbox and iCloud don't feature in this guy's workflow. My "workaround" is to use any of the following apps on my Mac and iPad that have no difficulty at all with Dropbox or iCloud, or any combination of the two:

WriteRoom (Dropbox only, but rock solid)
    Byword
    IAWriter
    Pages
Scrivener (Dropbox only, Mac only, but has a 100% reliable "sync to external folder" process)
    TaskPaper (Dropbox only)
    Mellel (Dropbox only)
    Nisus Writer Pro (Dropbox only).

I know, these are WAY TOO MANY options, but hey, I like supporting good editors :). Ulysses is a great editor, but can't sync to an external editor like Scrivener can. Daedalus is a great iPad editor, but is too unreliabe.

FWIW Soulmen, you aren't alone. Anyone who has tried working with MacJournal and trying to sync the Mac and iPad apps over Dropbox...well, enough said. The people over at Mariner haven't so much been asleep at the wheel where Dropbox and iCloud are concerned, they have been comatose.

At least the Soulmen have awoken.

I have been using Daedalus Touch for awhile on my iPad with Dropbx sync and love it. I installed DT on my iPhone 4S as soon as it came out, but ran into many of the problems people have listed here- very laggy, deleted titles, etc. Even after disabling iCloud synchronization, I still found DT incredibly laggy (unusably so) on my iPhone.

After reading various articles about the difficulties developers have had with iCloud, I decided to 'start over' by deleting DT and all associated data on my iPhone, then re-installing and setting up from scratch with only Dropbox sync. I did that, and now DT is running smoothly on my iPhone, and is finally running like the mini-version of DT I have on my iPad.

Dropbox sync isn't always perfect (sometimes the server hangs, etc.) but all in all Dropbox sync has been very good for me. Dropbox provides file versioning as well, in case there are ever problems with missing data. So now I'm looking forward to getting Ulysses III and incorporating that into my workflow.

Just wanted to contribute what finally got DT working well for me again.
